Speaker Biography
Tami Blumenfield is an anthropologist, professor and mother based in Greenville, South Carolina. She first traveled to Yongning, China, where Mosuo people live, at the age of 22 as a novice anthropologist affiliated with the Yunnan Institute of Nationalities, hosted by an incredible Mosuo female professor who became a close friend. Dr. Blumenfield has since dedicated her career to translating, interpreting, and sharing Mosuo culture. She has led research projects on family transformation, economic change, language shift, media production, and intangible cultural heritage preservation efforts in Mosuo villages and nearby cities. Her work has been featured on The Today Show (NBC, United States) and BBC Radio, among other outlets, and published in a wide range of books and journals. Dr. Blumenfield has also produced several films based on her work in Mosuo communities, some in collaboration with Mosuo museum curators and friends.
Dr. Blumenfield holds a doctorate in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Washington and a Master's of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. She currently teaches at Auburn University and has held affiliations with Yunnan University and the University of New Mexico.
